You don’t have to pump at all!

Pumping during your breastfeeding journey isn’t a given. You don’t have to pump for breastfeeding to work well or to prove you have a good supply. In fact many women never pump at all. A breast pump is one of the accessories most pregnant women who wish to breastfeed buy before their arrival. For some it’s a huge part of their journey for many reasons. As no two experiences are the same you have to do what works for you. I personally didn’t use a breast pump until I went back to work. I had used my Haaka silicone pump a couple of times when I had gone away for a night for my birthday, and before the odd night out.
But when I went back to work I didn’t know what I was going to use when I got uncomfortable or engorged. I had seen lots of neat looking pumps that fit into a bra and that were quite discreet, but I wasn’t looking for a long term expensive pump. So I just went with my Haaka, it works amazing when baby is feeding on one side, collecting milk from the other breast. However, it worked great at work under my dress, whilst I was a my desk or during my break. It just attaches to your breast through suction, and this was all I needed to get me through those first few weeks or maybe a month after returning to work. The amazing thing was my body began to adjust to the time I was away from my baby during work hours (I know it’s amazing). I no longer need to pump so much as I did when I first returned to work. Then we enjoyed those amazing bonding moments breastfeeding when we were home.
I returned to work when my little one was 13 months old. Women in the UK are returning to work from 3 month’s onwards as managing with the cut in pay usually after 6 months is difficult. Maternity action has the most up to date advice on how to continue your breastfeeding journey on your return to work.
